Modern Warfare 3: Review

on Wednesday, 23 November 2011. Posted in PS3, XBox 360, PC, Games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

I meant to get this review out sooner but I wanted to put the game through a few more paces.

So, the renowned Modern Warfare series gets a third iteration and at that it should be the last one. Both previous games got great reviews so one should expect the same from this one as well.

With these games, a lot of people decide to play the multiplayer first and sometimes only. However, I always play the game's single player first.

As such, let's get the story out of the way. I was a little foggy on the previous games story as I had not played it for quite awhile. However, this game allowed me to figure things out pretty easily. Saying that, anyone knew to the series would have no idea on what is exactly going on. This happened to me when playing Modern Warfare 2 before playing the first one. But, at the end of the game you get the general jist anyways.

The controls throughout the game are what you would expect from a game of this caliber. They are a little different from other FPS games I have been playing recently but they didn't take long at all to get used to.

Graphics seem unchanged in my opinion. They might be a little bit better but I really can't compare side by side as I do not own the previous game. That isn't to say they are bad though. I really couldn't find any complaints about the graphics.

Now, most people get Modern Warfare for the multiplayer. And, the multiplayer is pretty expansive. There is the standard multiplayer and the Spec Ops. I tend to spend more of my time with Spec Ops.

Spec Ops has two game modes, survivor and objectives. Both modes have to players fighting side by side. Survivor just has you fighting wave after wave of enemies. This mode is a lot of fun and really gets difficult the further you get. If you want to get far you are eventually going to have to come up with some strategy. The only downside to it in my opinion is that the waves really don't change all that much. They might spawn at different locations but you can expect the same enemies every game.

Objectives are familiar to me from Modern Warfare 2 which I played a lot with my cousins. There are a lot of them and you unlock more after reaching certain levels. These offer to fine tune your skills so that you can complete the task with the best time.

Then you get to the normal multiplayer. There is a lot of game modes in this so I am not going to go through them all. Some have objectives like blow up or protect things from being blown up, capturing flags, and the normal kill everybody that isn't on your team. I mostly play Team Deathmatch but Kill Confirmed might be an even better mode. Kill Confirmed requires your team to collect killed opponents dog tags to get the point.

Like most FPS games these days, the more you play online the more you level up, and the more you unlock stuff. I won't go to far in to detail on this as most should already know about it.

There are a lot of things to like about MW3. However, I have found a lot of things to not like and they mainly stem from the multiplayer. My biggest problem is lag. This wasn't much of a problem when I first started playing but just recently it has gotten real bad. I have played games where everyone is in the green and the lag just became to much to continue to playing.

My next huge grumble is that things just don't add up. I have heard similar complaints from others so I know it isn't just me. I will shoot about 10 rounds into an opponent. This is enough to kill them. However, I mysteriously die and when I watch the kill cam I don't get a single round off. Probably stems from a smaller amount of lag, I don't know but it still pisses me off. I don't care if I die but if the other person should be dieing on my screen they should be dead.

Finally, there is the funny habit of people dieing behind objects. I start getting rounds pumped into me so I run behind something. I am out of view(and I know I am from the kill cam) but rounds magically bend in midflight to find me.

Overall, I can't complain to much. Single player is awesome with a somewhat overused but still interesting ending. The multiplayer is actually fun when you get past all the stupid stuff that happens occasionally even if it is worse than any other FPS multiplayer I have experienced. I really suggest you Play This Game. You will always find a match even if it takes a bit and hopefully some of these lag problems are fixed and the multiplayer will be all that more enjoyable.

Bioshock 2: Review

on Tuesday, 15 November 2011. Posted in PS3, Games, Bioshock 2

I was a big fan of Bioshock. It wasn't to the point of playing it over and over again. But, it was a well done game. I liked the setting. I liked the story for the most part. I liked the enemies. It was a fun game. As such, I wanted to play Bioshock 2 but just wasn't on the top of my list. So, I finally got Bioshock 2. I payed around $10 for it so even if I wouldn't have liked the first the choice to get the second was a no brainer.

Overall, this game doesn't change a whole lot from the first. Bioshock 2 takes place after the first. It again takes place in Rapture. You encounter some of the same enemies you grew to know in the first. You are reintroduced to the past which is lucky cause I had forgotten some tid bits here and there. It kept true to itself which is what I was hoping for. But does that mean the game is still a must play?

When you start playing this game, you immediately think "Wow, the same graphics as the first." If you are graphic nazi you will probably notice some differences but as I have both not played the first game in a long time and I am not a graphic nazi, I couldn't remember any differences. That doesn't mean the graphics appear outdated. Not once during the game did I think "Man, these graphics suck."

This being a sequel, you would expect some additions and/or improvements. While subtle, there are quite a few.

The first big difference is that you are playing as a Big Daddy the entire time. Not only a Big Daddy, but an Alpha version of the Big Daddy. Even though they were the first step in the Daddy mentorship program, they are frickin badass. You get to use the drill. The drill easily became my favorite weapon!

Dual weilding was supposedly added. If I am remembering correctly, the first game required to switch between weapons and plasmids. This game has each in one hand. I am assuming that is what was meant by dual wielding.

There were some new enemies added. The first of the new enemies worth mentioning is the Big Sister. These put the big daddies to shame. Why? They are fast and just as brutish as their male counterpart. Eventually I got to the point where I would rather face a Big Sister over the Big Daddy but these things were a nightmare in the first half of the game.

Next up is the Brute. Think of this guy as a Big Daddy that instead of shooting stuff throws stuff. My first few encounters were pretty hectic. After ahile, they didn't seem to be so bad but they sure messed with my game plan when they appeared. Actually, think of these guys as a cross between the Big Daddy and a splicer in that they were strong like a Big Daddy but attacked you when they see you like a splicer.

And finally, I will mention the Aplha Series. These are many variations to Big Daddies but are loosely distinguishable as a Big Daddy. These guys are taller and more slender and faster. Being an Alpha Daddy yourself, you appreciate and also fear these guys. You don't see them much until later in the game and as such they don't seem as effective but I guarantee if you had to face one in the beginning of the game you would be like WTF!? Even later when you have to face multiples of these guys, you get to the point of WTF!?!?

The biggest addition to the game for me was being able to play as a Little Sister. I always wondered why they were bat shit crazy while also maintaining a eery calm in the game. Playing as once reveals so much information about them that you kind of feel sorry for them. I do not want to spoil it for anyone so I will stop there. This alone I feel is worth playing this game.

Overall the story was very good in my opinion. I felt it was on par with the last game's storyline if not a little bit better. I guess I felt like I was the character and that his story swayed the way I played the game more than the first.

I didn't have any problems with the controls. IMO they were as polished as they could be.

The sounds were excellent as always. Any game that incorporates old 50s style music is A-OK in my book. Monsters made noises I would expect and in some cases exceeded.

The one big fault I can give the game is that the game menu felt too slow or sluggish. I want to be able to switch to different parts of the menu instantaneously. It took a little bit. After I got used to it, it didn't frustrate me as much. Also, I thought if this technology was based in the 50s it would be a little clunky. I tried to think of it as an immersive experience. But, still overall annoying.

If you haven't played Bioshock 2, I highly suggest that You Play This Game! It is fun. Has a good storyline. There are very few things that I found wrong with this game.

Why I won't be getting Skyrim

on Wednesday, 02 November 2011. Posted in Blog, Games, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

It seems that Skyrim is all the rage. I keep hearing everybody talk about it. There has been war brewing even to declare its supremacy over Dark Souls. I haven't played either but I would rather play Dark Souls.

I do not want to play Skyrim at all. I never wanted to play Oblivion either. "Are you bonkers?" I am sure will be the question of the day. No, I am smart.

Now before you get all pissed off and assume I am calling you dumb of which I will neither comfirm nor deny, hear me out. It all stems from Bethesda. I have played their games before, most notably Fallout 3.

The recent Elder Scrolls games follow the same type of gameplay as the same game engine is used. And there lies in the problem. I love Fallout 3. There are a lot of things good about it. But, there are so many bad. And really, it is the developers fault. For instance, both Oblivion and Fallout 3 were known for being extremely buggy even to the point of game crashing. Before I continue, I should redirect blame from the developers to the companies involved. The developers are or at least should be happy to fix major bugs before release. But, that was not done and the gamer was the one to suffer.

If it wasn't for the storyline and the setting and possibly VATS, I would have absolutely hated Fallout 3. You had to walk almost to much. You walked around like a robot. Every 5 minutes the game crashed on me it seems and always at the worst possible time. The monsters were cool and fun to kill. I enjoyed leveling up and avoiding radiation. Luckily, that was there or I would have stopped playing Fallout 3 for good. There were quite a few times where I said "Screw this!!!!"

Now, Skyrim is a completely different game setting and storyline. I love fantasy and the dark ages type settings. But, putting what is Fallout 3 into that just doesn't excite me at all. I am constantly stuck with thinking about all the bugs. There are those terrible animations. The graphics were overall not that stellar even for the time. "Oh but there are dragons!" If you buy a game based on dragons you are an idiot

Who knows though, I might try it out and find that the game isn't buggy and the storyline and setting aren't that bad. Hell, I might even enjoy walking for 4 hours before even getting anywhere *sarcasm*. I really do hope I am proven wrong. Just I don't see it happening.

Dead Frontier: Review

on Tuesday, 01 November 2011. Posted in Web, Games, Dead Frontier

So, I decided to check out games that run through Chrome's Plugin manager thing that it offers. After doing some research, I decided to try out Dead Frontier. It seemed to have positive reviews and it is free to play.

Dead Frontier is a MMO Zombie Killing Overhead Shooter. Which sounds great. Zombie killing with it being MMO should provide endless fun. After all, how can you screw up a zombie game...

As I said, this game is a overhead shooter. Think Zombies Ate My Neighbors or more recently Dead Nation, both excellent zombie games btw. A lot of browser based games take this perspective so it is a good choice for this game.

Graphics are nothing to cry or cheer about. They are average but do provide an appropriate feel to the game. Especially as the game is darker.

There are various weapons that you can obtain. You can buy them or pick them up from enemies you kill, etc. The only downfall is, from what I have noticed, that you can only sell the items to other players. I could be wrong on this. You also have no real guideline on the current prices.

The maps are based in square segments. You travel through the squares to go to the next square. Each square is a separate load. Also, each square takes a bit to get through. Within the first quest, I already hated traveling around as it took forever to get where I needed and then to get back was just tedious. I can't imagine what it would be like to get to even further areas.

As you go through the areas you can walk past zombies without getting noticed but if you do get noticed, the zombies start to come after you. You can easily avoid them for the most part. I don't believe I have encountered every zombie type so there might be some that are crazy fast and are hard to run away from. Luckily, the areas I traveled were fairly populate by other players so even with massive hoards of zombies attacking you, you usually had some help.

There are a lot of different classes to choose from. I was quite impressed. However, the classes didn't offer a whole lot of difference between many of them except for what they looked like. However, there were a few gems.

Overall, I found Dead Frontier very disappointing. It was more tedious than fun. The game tries to be expansive but overall is just repetitive. I got bored after the first mission and stopped playing after that. Maybe it gets a hell of a lot better but I doubt it would get that much better in my eyes. But, the game is free to play. There are of course payed elements to it but I didn't feel forced to pay for anything in my short time with the game. I would recommend that you Do Not Play This Game. There are far better free MMOs out there to waste your time on.

If you do decide to play this game, I recommend starting with a character that comes with a upgraded melee weapon. To start with, this will be most beneficial as zombies are easy to strike and run. I didn't do this and went through a lot of ammo. You should still get a melee weapon but I would have preferred an upgraded one.

Reserve Your Pilot Name

on Tuesday, 01 November 2011. Posted in PC, Games, MechWarrior Online

Something that you may want to take note on if you are a huge MechWarrior fan is that you can reserve your pilot name now before the game is released. That way, you can make sure you get the name you want.

I already did this and luckily got a name that is hard to get on the interwebz. If you must know, it is IceNine. So, be sure to look me up when the game releases.

Doing this will also allow you to access and use other parts of the site, most notably the forum.

Go here to get your name reserved before it is taken.

MechWarrior Online Is Official

on Tuesday, 01 November 2011. Posted in Platforms, PC, Games, MechWarrior Online

It has been two years since Piranha Games has released any information on the new MechWarrior game they are supposed to release. If you have been following the franchise at all, you saw the completely badass video they released those two years ago. Many a gamers were jizzing in their pants.

Well, now it is official. And, it is being called MechWarrior Online. This game is to be PC exclusive(absolutely no complaints here). The game is also set to be F2P and sounds like strictly online. Don't quote me though. This is both a good thing and a bad thing for me. F2P done right could expose the game to a lot more people. But, I loved the single player campaigns.

MechWarrior Online is obviously set in the Battletech Universe but will be around the 3048 era. The developers are saying this era will allow the game to flow with the style they want to do. Each day on Mechwarrior Online will be a day in our world and events will happen as they do in the story. Pretty exciting for me.

There isn't a whole lot of information yet. However, PC Gamer(bastards) seem to be getting a lot of exclusive info today so you will want to keep an eye on them for more information if I don't put it up on here.

Also, be sure to check out the official MechWarrior Online website here.

The Blizzard WoW Server Auction

on Friday, 14 October 2011. Posted in PC, Games, World of Warcraft

Blizzard always seems to have a heart. Or, maybe they just like the positive light/more playage they receive. I am an optimist so I will stick with the former. Blizzard is now hosting a series of auctions for former server parts that they used in the past for there WoW servers.

Now, I mentioned that they might have a heart. This is for the fact that the proceeds from these auctions are going to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital which in all respects is a great institution to support.

For more information on the auction, go here.

Steam Manniversary

on Friday, 14 October 2011. Posted in Platforms, PC, Games, Team Fortress 2

A lot of anniversaries it seems. This time Steam is celebrating their first Manniversary. What the hell is a manniversary you ask?

Steam has released their new Workshop. The Steam Workshop is a submission hub that they improved upon for community created content. The perk is that Valve will comment and rate the entries as well. We will call this part one to the celebration.

Part two actually is about the Manniversary. The Manniversary is for the Mann Co store. The Mann Co store is a store for the previously mentioned user created content. With it, they are updating the store and having a huge sale. They have an awesome epamphlet here for all the details. So check it out!

FYI, if you don't check it you are an idiot. The pamphlet cover is just pure awesome.

Rockstar's GTA III 10th Anniversary

on Friday, 14 October 2011. Posted in iDevices, Android, Games, Grand Theft Auto III

Can you believe it has been 10 years since the release of Grand Theft Auto III. I for one cannot. That game did things to me. I started to expect more from games after playing that game. It was awesome. Guess what I am going to be writing next now? A Blast From The Past.

Anyways, to get back to the topic at hand, Rockstar is celebrating the 10th anniversary as well. For starters, they are re releasing the game. It will make its way to new generation Android and iDevices this fall. That means it will be on the following:

  • iPad 2
  • iPhone 4s
  • Droid X2
  • HTC Evo 2
  • LG Optimus 2x
  • Motorola Atrix
  • Samsung Galaxy S2
  • Acer Iconia
  • Asus Eee Pad
  • Motorola Xoom
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
I am sure even newer devices will be able to get it as well. But, it is pretty impressive that they are putting this game on a phone.

Along with the re release, they are also releasing a limited addition action figure of Claude. Don't know Claude? Replay the game! Anywho, the action figure is made by Sideshow. I don't collect action figures so I have no idea who this company is but Rockstar talks them up. He comes dressed in his normal attire plus gets a bonus prison suit. He also comes with various weapons from the game. Oh, he is 1:6 scale. Now, don't have a heart attack... The MSRP is $149.99!!!!! I love the game but I don't love action figures. I will probably be passing. However, Rockstar's Social Club members can possibly get one for free. Just get there before 10/16/2011.

Claptrap's New Robot Revolution: Review

on Friday, 07 October 2011. Posted in PS3, Games, Borderlands

The Ninja Assassin Finally Is Revealed

So, I finally played the last to be released of the Borderlands' DLC. If you don't know, it is Claptrap's New Robot Revolution. Look at the title! Anyways, this is the DLC that I am pretty sure almost everyone was expecting to be released first as it was the last cut-scene of the main game. But alas, it was the last. Weird... Anyways, how did it fair?

Graphics use the same old same old as Borderlands. Which is not a bad thing at all. I love the look. I usually dislike cell shading as it is a kind of cheat to get the game running better as it is less hardware intense. However, gearbox made it their own and frankly the world looks better than I think it would have otherwise.

The vast array of enemies really don't change. You have some new Hyperion soldiers that are pretty tough. I am pretty sure I have not encountered them really anywhere else. Unfortunately, you encounter them maybe once before they are turned into traps. The ones that I can remember are the Lieutenant and the Grenader. The grenader can summon that shielded turret which can make him a pain in the ass. Luckily those aren't the only new enemies.

You also get some claptrap enemies. These come in four varieties that I can remember. The first is the rebel which is like any other enemy and can have a random weapon to shoot at you with. The next up is the samurai. He is a melee fighter and usually has some blades attached to his arms. There is one more that is melee based but for the life of me I can't remember its name. He has what appears to be big cans on his hands. Kind of like a boxer I suppose. The final claptrap is a kamikaze suicide bomber. Yes, kamikaze and suicide tend to refer to the same thing. This little bastard can ruin your day as one direct hit and you are done. And a lot of the time, a couple are being sent at you so it is easy to miss one.

The rest of the enemies are claptrap altered baddies you have faced before, including those Hyperion soldiers. Even the turrets are claptraped. And speaking of claptraped, even most of the bosses are claptraped as well. Let's just say they take the hardest from the DLCs past along with one special one that you never got to fight. I don't want to spoil everything. You have a completely new boss never encountered as well that isn't any form of claptrap. And than, you have two claptrap bosses. The one thinks he is a chicken and the other is the rebel leader himself. Let me just say, the rebel leader is the toughest boss I faced that is apart of the main storyline. Let's just say I still haven't beat him.

As is natural with the other DLC, you are put into a completely new are that seems to be cutoff from the rest of the Borderlands world. You encounter some old friends and a new oneish.

Overall, I would have to say that Claptrap's New Robot Revolution is one of the hardest DLCs of Borderlands, if not the hardest. I know I died a plenty. But, it doesn't get boring either. This is easily top 2 DLC for Borderlands that I have played. I haven't played Mad Moxxi's DLC yet but I don't own it. So, I can easily recommend that you Play This DLC!

Gears of War 3: Review

on Sunday, 02 October 2011. Posted in XBox 360, Games, Gears of War 3

An excellent conclusion to the Gears of War trilogy

The final installment to the Gears of War trilogy. If you haven't played any of the gears, let me sum it up. An alien race called the locust have been inhabiting the earth, they recently began surfacing and the government is trying to put an end to it. They strive on a natural resource called emulsion, a.k.a an abundant radioactive fuel source. And that's where the COG (Coalition of Ordered Governments) come in. They kick ass and chew bubble gum!

COG's Delta Squad is comprised of:

Marcus Fenix (Fenix) the serious bread and butter main character

Dominic Santiago (Dom) Marcus's best friend and ally

Augustus Cole (Cole Train) an over the top thunder ball player

Damon Baird (Baird) pyrotechnic, computer geek, comic relief

Anya Stroud (Anya) the bitch from the previous game that told us what to do

Man wearing helmet, think of him like you think of Kenny from South Park.

The story starts you out in a vision or dream, which ends up being more of a tutorial on how to fire and dodge. Marcus hears his father talking and everything starts to get swallowed up into a swirling vertex.

After the unusual introduction sudo tutorial the game picks up. A brief exploration of a ship then you are thrown into the fire. The first thing I noticed is the precision in aiming. It's no Call of Duty but it was a complete overhaul from the previously released tittles. I was overjoyed that you can aim for an enemies face and actually have a chance of instantly killing it. I was gitty from the controller down.

As you progress you come into contact with a handful of new enemies. These enemies are referred to as lambent. The lambent creatures are a mutated form of locust that have taken on emulsion. The first addition is a large vine that will pop out of the ground. The vine grows pods that give birth to lambent enemies. The idea is to shoot the pods before you become overrun. The second type of enemy have bright glowing areas on their bodies which is obviously their week points. Upon destroying lambent they will explode. Some of them even hunt you down and jump on you before they explode. I have died a lot from these damn things.

The beginning of the game is in two sections Cole's perspective and Marus's perspective. You switch back and forth between teams and replay the same moment but different location. I have to say this section was choreographed quite well. The game does bring the two ill fated teams together again, so your not reliving experiences the whole game.

You are given a encrypted video of Marcus's father which Baird promptly de-encrypts. What? Marcus's father is alive? I thought he died in the locust war? Hmm.. After hearing the good news Marcus sets out to rescue his father.

The main drive for the story line is the Delta Squad aiding Marcus in his quest to save his father. Did I mention his father is a genius and can save the human race? The frame story of the game is Dom seeking vengeance for the unfortunate events that lead up to his wife's death.

Throughout the game you will stumble upon some bad ass weaponry. These weapons are used to turn the tides in battle against the locust and the lambent. One of the first weapons you get is a one man mech, it can sprint, jump, fire missiles, and has a high powered machine gun. Other weapons include a portable Gatling gun which is of the spray and pray variety. A two person Gatling gun which one person holds the amo box and the second destroys everything in his/her path, much stronger stopping power then the one man Gatling gun. A large rusty two handed steel sword, it slices, it dices, it decapitates! A large battle shield, used in tough situations to hide from a rain of bullets. And my favorite, the one shot sniper rifle, one shot kills just about anything ANYTHING! As with any of the weapons mentioned you mobility is drastically slowed down. Unfortunately, the larger weapons cannot be carried past well placed barricades that the player must leap over to progress the story.

As you play through the story the game does test your ability quite a bit, especially on hardcore difficulty. There are several unique enemy encounters, one of which is an emulsion infused berserk-er that spews radioactive emulsion everywhere and you can only shoot it as its running directly at you. Be prepared to play white mage with other players. Another remember-able encounter is a hedge hog looking enemy that is fast and can only be taken down with explosives. Of course these are normally found in a relatively close encounter area, where one has to use explosives.

I personally played system link co-op with a friend. You can also play cooperatively with a team of online players that take the position of the AI. It was interesting to suddenly see the AI take off in random directions and complete tasks for me. It was only after they cleared a room with more perfection then I had did I realize that some random strangers joined my battle against the locust.

There is a large handful of Easter eggs in the game if you are willing and out of the box crazy to find them. Including a gun that fires explosive chickens.

My general experiences with Gears of War 3 were above my expectations. The graphics have been revamped compared to the last two installments. The story line was very enjoyable, it had its moments of laughter, and its moments of tears. As far as character developments go for FPS games the Gears of War series is top notch. The second hardest difficulty that I chose did not keep me from enjoying the game. I would defiantly play Gears of War 3 again on the hardest unlocked difficulty. If you had a game to spend a weekend on I would highly recommend giving this a rental. If you can spend hours upon hours just killing lambent and locust I would recommend buying Gears of War 3 for its horde 2.0 mode. Horde 2.0 is just that, a multiplayer experience where you survive wave after wave of the best the game has to throw at you.

Overkill: Review

on Saturday, 01 October 2011. Posted in iDevices, Games, Overkill

Overkill is similar to those arcade shooters. You know, the ones where you have a plastic gun and you point at the screen and kill enemies that pop up. Except, you are using your fingers to aim and shoot. One of the best qualities about Overkill is the fact that there are so many weapons. And since I first got the game, I think have added somewhere around 10 new weapons. These weapons are all based off of real world weapons. And while I am no weapons exert, these in game weapons feel like they do a good job imitating their real world brethren at least to the point of what my imagination would expect. There are varying degrees of enemies as well. There are not that many unique enemies but there is enough variance that I really couldn’t complain. Each of these has their own difficulty which changes the further along you get and based on the spawning of them. For instance, some take longer to fire their shots. Some have more powerful weapons. Some even call in air strikes. Usually, the graphics are among the first things I talk about in a game review. Usually, they are your first impression. However, graphics just don’t seem to play as big of a part in this game. Not in a bad way! However, the graphics aren’t that bad either. Weapons are fairly detailed for being on such a small screen. Enemies are pretty cool looking. You really can’t complain but for me I was more worried about searching for enemies than looking at how good or bad the graphics were. The controls are pretty basic. You use your left thumb or finger on the the left part of the screen to aim. The right you use to press when you want to fire. Very simple. There have been a few times where this posed a problem but I have fairly large fingers and it didn’t happen enough to actually stop playing the game because it was such a problem. For whatever reason, this game implements a in game currency that I don’t mind. You can buy it with real world money or earn it when you level up. But, you don’t need it. You can keep playing and never actually use while still getting upgraded weapons and what not. It is there if you really want to get ahead. There are options to get the currency from installing apps. You can just purchase it. But it comes down to not ever being forced into using it. That is a way a game that decides to use in game currency should be setup. Maybe some other social/app developers *cough*Zynga*cough* should take notice of this. This is easily in the top 5 of my favorite games on the iPhone. Part of it is nostalgia from all those arcade shooters I used to play. Part of it is that this game combines simplicity with many features and a non intrusive in game currency. I suggest you Play This Game!

Angry Bulls: Review

on Saturday, 01 October 2011. Posted in iDevices, Games, Angry Bulls

There are some games that I truly would never consider playing. However, I than notice that they are in the top list on the App Store and they are free. So, I decide to give them a try. Angry Bulls is one of those games. To be honest, I still don’t know what to think about this game. It is just such a strange concept to me to put in a game. Baffling... Anyways, the graphics kind of suck. They are those 3D graphics that I hate so much. Actually, I love the graphics for the load screens and the menus. The gameplay graphics just are meh and the standard poor quality iPhone 3d graphics. It is really weird to have to very opposing opinions and the same concept. The rest of the game is... interesting. There are three modes. Two of the modes should remind you of the Running of the Bulls in Spain. Don’t know what that is? Think horns in fleshy humans and than those gored humans being trampled on by hooves that have a ton of force behind them. The one mode is where you control a bull and you try to gore as many fleshy humans that you can. You have some specials such as rearing your head or charging faster. The second of these is where you control a human and try and stay ahead of the bull and to not get gored or trampled by it. The final mode is where you are in a bull fighting ring. This is actually apart of the Running of the Bulls as well but not what most people think of. In this mode, you control the bull and try to gore and trample as many people as you can. This is a little harder as they can run in multiple directions and just seem smarter. It is really hard for me to give a true position on whether or not you should play the game. The gameplay is interesting but nothing revolutionary. The graphics suck. But, the game is free or at least was when I downloaded it. I think if you are really struggling to find a game to play, try it out otherwise Don’t Play This Game.

Army of Darkness Defense: Review

on Thursday, 29 September 2011. Posted in iDevices, Games, Army of Darkness Defense

You ever watch those movies that are extremely campy and battle of the dead themed. I am talking about Evil Dead and its counterparts. To be honest, I can’t remember all that much of them anymore. I guess it is time to watch them again. However, to my surprise, there is a game based on the sequel entitled Army of Darkness. Oh for the record, Bruce Campbell is the man. Anyways, Army of Darkness is a tower defense type game in some regards. I find it somewhat similar to DoTA Tower Defense variations. However, most of your “towers” are moving units. This is what reminds me of the DoTA TD variants. There are some non moving towers but I will distinguish them later. As usual, graphics play an important part. The graphics is more so similar to those sidescrolling platformers of the Super Nintendo and Genesis age. In my opinion that is a good thing. I rarely talk about the sounds of a game, but Army of Darkness is special. It takes some of the best quotes from the movie and implements them into the game. Pure awesome. Screw those that think otherwise. Otherwise, the rest are what you would expect of a game. You play as Ash. You can fight monsters as well as pick up coins and what I believe to be iron ingots from enemies. You have two standard attacks. You have your fist for close range which can be upgraded to a chainsaw and you have your double barreled shotgun. The game’s level up concept is solely based on the coins you get. The game is free. However, you can buy coins with real world money to get leveled up faster. This is one thing that I really like about this game. You don’t have to use real money to progress but the option is there. A lot of games like to “force” you to use your hard earned money. Leveling up ash increases attack power and health and such. As you go through levels, you unlock special attacks. These vary. However, they can also be leveled up with your gold that you pick up from dead monsters. Some of the special attacks are pretty sweet. And really, they all can be continually used throughout the later levels without to much of a difference in playability. They are different so you can go with your style. As you can only have a couple of special attacks at a time, you will develop your own strategy. Continuing through the levels will allow you to summon different monsters. You can only summon a handful of different monsters which you can choose at the beginning of each level. This is similar to the special attacks. You can upgrade these monsters as well so that they increase in power. You will need these guys and their increased power as the levels get harder. You build up your ingots while you are playing which allows you to buy these guys. They are summoned and help you fight the waves of enemies that come forth. They die, you summon more, and well you better keep on summoning. The final aspect of the game is building up the defenses of the castle. You are tasked with protecting the book. You can build up the armor of the cage protecting the book. You can get archers and catapults. You can even get a pit that when you knock back enemies near it they fall in. Most of these are upgradeable as well. Monsters vary enough as well to keep things interesting as well as figuring out strategies to kill monsters and especially when to kill certain monsters. Later on, it will become especially important to figure out when to knock certain types of enemies back into the pit so you can save some health. In the end, Army of Darkness has become the biggest surprise for me on the iPhone. I really didn’t expect that much from it. However, it offers a clear end goal initially and offers extremely fun gameplay. Right now, it is probably my favorite game for the iPhone. So guess what? Play This Game NOW! It is free so you have no excuse.
