Claptrap's New Robot Revolution: Review

The Ninja Assassin Finally Is Revealed

So, I finally played the last to be released of the Borderlands' DLC. If you don't know, it is Claptrap's New Robot Revolution. Look at the title! Anyways, this is the DLC that I am pretty sure almost everyone was expecting to be released first as it was the last cut-scene of the main game. But alas, it was the last. Weird... Anyways, how did it fair?

Graphics use the same old same old as Borderlands. Which is not a bad thing at all. I love the look. I usually dislike cell shading as it is a kind of cheat to get the game running better as it is less hardware intense. However, gearbox made it their own and frankly the world looks better than I think it would have otherwise.

The vast array of enemies really don't change. You have some new Hyperion soldiers that are pretty tough. I am pretty sure I have not encountered them really anywhere else. Unfortunately, you encounter them maybe once before they are turned into traps. The ones that I can remember are the Lieutenant and the Grenader. The grenader can summon that shielded turret which can make him a pain in the ass. Luckily those aren't the only new enemies.

You also get some claptrap enemies. These come in four varieties that I can remember. The first is the rebel which is like any other enemy and can have a random weapon to shoot at you with. The next up is the samurai. He is a melee fighter and usually has some blades attached to his arms. There is one more that is melee based but for the life of me I can't remember its name. He has what appears to be big cans on his hands. Kind of like a boxer I suppose. The final claptrap is a kamikaze suicide bomber. Yes, kamikaze and suicide tend to refer to the same thing. This little bastard can ruin your day as one direct hit and you are done. And a lot of the time, a couple are being sent at you so it is easy to miss one.

The rest of the enemies are claptrap altered baddies you have faced before, including those Hyperion soldiers. Even the turrets are claptraped. And speaking of claptraped, even most of the bosses are claptraped as well. Let's just say they take the hardest from the DLCs past along with one special one that you never got to fight. I don't want to spoil everything. You have a completely new boss never encountered as well that isn't any form of claptrap. And than, you have two claptrap bosses. The one thinks he is a chicken and the other is the rebel leader himself. Let me just say, the rebel leader is the toughest boss I faced that is apart of the main storyline. Let's just say I still haven't beat him.

As is natural with the other DLC, you are put into a completely new are that seems to be cutoff from the rest of the Borderlands world. You encounter some old friends and a new oneish.

Overall, I would have to say that Claptrap's New Robot Revolution is one of the hardest DLCs of Borderlands, if not the hardest. I know I died a plenty. But, it doesn't get boring either. This is easily top 2 DLC for Borderlands that I have played. I haven't played Mad Moxxi's DLC yet but I don't own it. So, I can easily recommend that you Play This DLC!

The Secret Armory of General Knoxx: Review

on Thursday, 01 September 2011. Posted in Borderlands, PS3

In my quest to finally dominate Borderlands, I decided to unleash Brick on the General Knoxx. That is through the DLC The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. This will be the second of the available DLC content for Borderlands that I have played. So, how did it fair agains the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned?

The general gameplay is what you would expect from Borderlands. You quest. You hunt for treasure or in this case weapons and armor. You meet and interact with new and interesting characters. Which means it is all solid and I still think it is worth the play.

The biggest thing that is brought to the table for most people is a higher level cap. I hate to give credit to raising the max level in games because if the game is programmed properly all that is need to be done is change a few numbers around. However it is welcome. It manages to give me that extra ambition to keep playing on top of the quests.

This DLC is more driver centered. You are expected to drive a lot more and along with that some new vehicles are introduced. They are beefier but they are slower. However, they are needed in quite a few instances and are a nice introduction.

However, it almost seems there is to much driving. Well, maybe not to much driving but to much repetitive driving. Most of the driving is done on highways which that is just driving in one direction. Sure, the game tries to through in some bumps that make you go about things the round about way and out of the vehicle. Even that almost gets to be to much and then they stop making you do it. At least for awhile until they make you do it one last time. It is bearable and really overall doesn’t detract from the fun to much.

There are a few new enemies. Mostly, these are variations on some of the Crimson Lance soldiers and the thug enemies. However, they add a few new ones that are altogether new along with some new species and bosses that it makes for an interesting experience finding weaknesses and plain just defeating them.

My favorite part of this DLC is the new characters that you interact with. The first one you meet is the central reason for all the quests. You meat some old characters again as well. General Knoxx is pretty awesome in my opinion and I hated that I had to fight him. However, my favorite new character is Mad Moxxi. Granted, if you had the Mad Moxxi DLC first you would already know of her. I haven’t played that DLC yet so ya. However, IMO she is hot and just a very interesting personality. I wish I would have had more quests from her or just more interaction.

There is a new epic boss introduced as well. He is extremely difficult and provides the opportunity to get the best dropped items in the game. I will leave it at that.

All in all, this DLC turns out to be an excellent one despite some of the pitfalls. Even with those pitfalls, I can easily suggest that you Play This Game, err DLC!

Zombie Island of Dr. Ned: Review

on Tuesday, 16 August 2011. Posted in Borderlands, PS3

For me, DLC or addon packs usually equates to cheap thrill. This is usually not in a good sense. Some of the past DLC I have experienced requires more money for unimpressive content. This usually includes cars, maybe a few maps, or even just skins. Even story based addons tend to lack in quality and content. So, I am always skeptical of buying this type of content. Especially when it is only offered in downloadable format.

However, I love Borderlands. It is easily one of my favorite games. That and coupled with a sale on the addon packs I was more than eager to buy some DLC. Now, there is a Game of the Year edition now available that offers all the DLC with the game. However, I got Borderlands well before DLC was released.

The first DLC I figured I would try was the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned. Personally, the surge of Zombie based games has me overwhelmed and usually sick of them. They are awesome but they become same old same old.

Zombie Island is an island owned by the Jakobs corporation that have had some strange happenings going on. You are to investigate the happenings along with Dr. Ned who has been around for the whole process of the zombification.

The gameplay is overall the same as the basic game. You shoot and gain levels while finding badass gear.

However, the setting is drastically changed. There is a darker feel. Hell, there is even an area that mocks Old Haven by making it the zombie equivalent.

My favorite part has to be the enemies. Rather than having completely new enemies, they just zombify among other things the current Borderlands baddies. They act completely different but the similarities and differences mix extremely well.

One thing I will tell you, the bosses are extremely tough. They are awesome but I was around level 55 when facing them and I had an extremely tough time. Even the strongest non boss is pretty damn tough. But, I am glad as it just made it more of a challenge.

The story is pretty rock solid as well. Some things are expected but there are enough back stories and surprises that make this DLC entertaining and intriguing.

Needless to say, Play This DLC! I had just as much fun, if not more, than the original game. Plus, it changes enough up that it almost feels like a separate game.
