Rockstar's GTA III 10th Anniversary

on Friday, 14 October 2011. Posted in iDevices, Android, Games, Grand Theft Auto III

Can you believe it has been 10 years since the release of Grand Theft Auto III. I for one cannot. That game did things to me. I started to expect more from games after playing that game. It was awesome. Guess what I am going to be writing next now? A Blast From The Past.

Anyways, to get back to the topic at hand, Rockstar is celebrating the 10th anniversary as well. For starters, they are re releasing the game. It will make its way to new generation Android and iDevices this fall. That means it will be on the following:

  • iPad 2
  • iPhone 4s
  • Droid X2
  • HTC Evo 2
  • LG Optimus 2x
  • Motorola Atrix
  • Samsung Galaxy S2
  • Acer Iconia
  • Asus Eee Pad
  • Motorola Xoom
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
I am sure even newer devices will be able to get it as well. But, it is pretty impressive that they are putting this game on a phone.

Along with the re release, they are also releasing a limited addition action figure of Claude. Don't know Claude? Replay the game! Anywho, the action figure is made by Sideshow. I don't collect action figures so I have no idea who this company is but Rockstar talks them up. He comes dressed in his normal attire plus gets a bonus prison suit. He also comes with various weapons from the game. Oh, he is 1:6 scale. Now, don't have a heart attack... The MSRP is $149.99!!!!! I love the game but I don't love action figures. I will probably be passing. However, Rockstar's Social Club members can possibly get one for free. Just get there before 10/16/2011.

iPhone 4S At A Glance

on Wednesday, 05 October 2011. Posted in Platforms, iDevices

I should have probably wrote about this yesterday already but I was a little disappointed with what Apple was serving up. I just feel they sat back and kissed the competitor's ass for innovating. Granted, not much innovation. But, Apple just seemed to take what everyone else already had and put it in their phone.

There are a few things that I am happy about. The first being keeping with the 4's design. I absolutely love the design. Bitch all you want but I haven't had one problem with it.

But, there are a good things coming for the gamers. Which I will talk about. All the specs are not released yet as far as I can tell but we do know that it has a dual core processor and a dual core graphics or something like that. So essentially, the 4S is twice as powerful as the 4. According to Apple, the graphics are 7 times more powerful than the current offering.

Gamers should be jizzing in their pants right about now.  I am not quite one of them. The main reason is that 3d graphics suck on the iPhone.

  1. These are cheap games so they won't go all out.
  2. They truly can't go all out.
  3. The platform only has a 3.5in screen(4 is still probably to small for ambitious graphics).
But all games should be zippier and more responsive. Which is a huge plus. Let's just hope the developer's don't decide to get lazy because frankly most have already been pretty lazy.

Overkill: Review

on Saturday, 01 October 2011. Posted in iDevices, Games, Overkill

Overkill is similar to those arcade shooters. You know, the ones where you have a plastic gun and you point at the screen and kill enemies that pop up. Except, you are using your fingers to aim and shoot. One of the best qualities about Overkill is the fact that there are so many weapons. And since I first got the game, I think have added somewhere around 10 new weapons. These weapons are all based off of real world weapons. And while I am no weapons exert, these in game weapons feel like they do a good job imitating their real world brethren at least to the point of what my imagination would expect. There are varying degrees of enemies as well. There are not that many unique enemies but there is enough variance that I really couldn’t complain. Each of these has their own difficulty which changes the further along you get and based on the spawning of them. For instance, some take longer to fire their shots. Some have more powerful weapons. Some even call in air strikes. Usually, the graphics are among the first things I talk about in a game review. Usually, they are your first impression. However, graphics just don’t seem to play as big of a part in this game. Not in a bad way! However, the graphics aren’t that bad either. Weapons are fairly detailed for being on such a small screen. Enemies are pretty cool looking. You really can’t complain but for me I was more worried about searching for enemies than looking at how good or bad the graphics were. The controls are pretty basic. You use your left thumb or finger on the the left part of the screen to aim. The right you use to press when you want to fire. Very simple. There have been a few times where this posed a problem but I have fairly large fingers and it didn’t happen enough to actually stop playing the game because it was such a problem. For whatever reason, this game implements a in game currency that I don’t mind. You can buy it with real world money or earn it when you level up. But, you don’t need it. You can keep playing and never actually use while still getting upgraded weapons and what not. It is there if you really want to get ahead. There are options to get the currency from installing apps. You can just purchase it. But it comes down to not ever being forced into using it. That is a way a game that decides to use in game currency should be setup. Maybe some other social/app developers *cough*Zynga*cough* should take notice of this. This is easily in the top 5 of my favorite games on the iPhone. Part of it is nostalgia from all those arcade shooters I used to play. Part of it is that this game combines simplicity with many features and a non intrusive in game currency. I suggest you Play This Game!

Angry Bulls: Review

on Saturday, 01 October 2011. Posted in iDevices, Games, Angry Bulls

There are some games that I truly would never consider playing. However, I than notice that they are in the top list on the App Store and they are free. So, I decide to give them a try. Angry Bulls is one of those games. To be honest, I still don’t know what to think about this game. It is just such a strange concept to me to put in a game. Baffling... Anyways, the graphics kind of suck. They are those 3D graphics that I hate so much. Actually, I love the graphics for the load screens and the menus. The gameplay graphics just are meh and the standard poor quality iPhone 3d graphics. It is really weird to have to very opposing opinions and the same concept. The rest of the game is... interesting. There are three modes. Two of the modes should remind you of the Running of the Bulls in Spain. Don’t know what that is? Think horns in fleshy humans and than those gored humans being trampled on by hooves that have a ton of force behind them. The one mode is where you control a bull and you try to gore as many fleshy humans that you can. You have some specials such as rearing your head or charging faster. The second of these is where you control a human and try and stay ahead of the bull and to not get gored or trampled by it. The final mode is where you are in a bull fighting ring. This is actually apart of the Running of the Bulls as well but not what most people think of. In this mode, you control the bull and try to gore and trample as many people as you can. This is a little harder as they can run in multiple directions and just seem smarter. It is really hard for me to give a true position on whether or not you should play the game. The gameplay is interesting but nothing revolutionary. The graphics suck. But, the game is free or at least was when I downloaded it. I think if you are really struggling to find a game to play, try it out otherwise Don’t Play This Game.

Army of Darkness Defense: Review

on Thursday, 29 September 2011. Posted in iDevices, Games, Army of Darkness Defense

You ever watch those movies that are extremely campy and battle of the dead themed. I am talking about Evil Dead and its counterparts. To be honest, I can’t remember all that much of them anymore. I guess it is time to watch them again. However, to my surprise, there is a game based on the sequel entitled Army of Darkness. Oh for the record, Bruce Campbell is the man. Anyways, Army of Darkness is a tower defense type game in some regards. I find it somewhat similar to DoTA Tower Defense variations. However, most of your “towers” are moving units. This is what reminds me of the DoTA TD variants. There are some non moving towers but I will distinguish them later. As usual, graphics play an important part. The graphics is more so similar to those sidescrolling platformers of the Super Nintendo and Genesis age. In my opinion that is a good thing. I rarely talk about the sounds of a game, but Army of Darkness is special. It takes some of the best quotes from the movie and implements them into the game. Pure awesome. Screw those that think otherwise. Otherwise, the rest are what you would expect of a game. You play as Ash. You can fight monsters as well as pick up coins and what I believe to be iron ingots from enemies. You have two standard attacks. You have your fist for close range which can be upgraded to a chainsaw and you have your double barreled shotgun. The game’s level up concept is solely based on the coins you get. The game is free. However, you can buy coins with real world money to get leveled up faster. This is one thing that I really like about this game. You don’t have to use real money to progress but the option is there. A lot of games like to “force” you to use your hard earned money. Leveling up ash increases attack power and health and such. As you go through levels, you unlock special attacks. These vary. However, they can also be leveled up with your gold that you pick up from dead monsters. Some of the special attacks are pretty sweet. And really, they all can be continually used throughout the later levels without to much of a difference in playability. They are different so you can go with your style. As you can only have a couple of special attacks at a time, you will develop your own strategy. Continuing through the levels will allow you to summon different monsters. You can only summon a handful of different monsters which you can choose at the beginning of each level. This is similar to the special attacks. You can upgrade these monsters as well so that they increase in power. You will need these guys and their increased power as the levels get harder. You build up your ingots while you are playing which allows you to buy these guys. They are summoned and help you fight the waves of enemies that come forth. They die, you summon more, and well you better keep on summoning. The final aspect of the game is building up the defenses of the castle. You are tasked with protecting the book. You can build up the armor of the cage protecting the book. You can get archers and catapults. You can even get a pit that when you knock back enemies near it they fall in. Most of these are upgradeable as well. Monsters vary enough as well to keep things interesting as well as figuring out strategies to kill monsters and especially when to kill certain monsters. Later on, it will become especially important to figure out when to knock certain types of enemies back into the pit so you can save some health. In the end, Army of Darkness has become the biggest surprise for me on the iPhone. I really didn’t expect that much from it. However, it offers a clear end goal initially and offers extremely fun gameplay. Right now, it is probably my favorite game for the iPhone. So guess what? Play This Game NOW! It is free so you have no excuse.

Zombie Highway: Review

on Wednesday, 28 September 2011. Posted in iDevices, Games, Zombie Highway

Zombie games are everywhere. It seems like at least every six months there is a zombie game released for the consoles and/or the PC. Actually, it is probably double that. When you start to look at the iPhone or even Android, things just get nuts. What can I say, we love to kill zombies. Hell, half of us want a real zombie apocalypse to erupt. Not saying I do... Anyways, most zombie games are shooters. Even more so, first person shooters. However, every once in awhile a zombie game appears that breaks away from that formula. This time, that is Zombie Highway. In Zombie Highway, all you do is drive down a highway and try to not get flipped by zombies or crash. This is an extremely simple concept. At first, I didn’t want to play the game as I thought it would be boring. On the contrary, the game was a bit of fresh air. The purpose of the game is to drive as far as you can without having your vehicle flipped or crashing in objects along the road. As you drive, zombies jump onto your vehicle. Your vehicle can be jumped on by four zombies at a time. The more zombies there are the easier it is for your vehicle to be flipped. Some zombies tug so that your vehicle moves/tilts in the direction they are pulling. Some zombies are just fat bastards that add weight to one side of the vehicle. While you are dealing with these zombies, you have to avoid abandoned cars and buses on the highway. Later on, we will go more into how you deal with these zombies. First things first, the graphics... I really hate mobile games that think they need to have 3D graphics. Why? They suck!!! Zombie Highway goes that route unfortunately. It is not terrible but I really do hate 3D graphics on the current smartphones. You can’t drive along a highway without a vehicle. Half of the strategy with this game is what vehicle you drive. The more you drive the more vehicles you unlock. Some are fast. Some are harder to flip. In the end, you need to pick a style that suits you. There are not a whole lot of options when it comes to vehicles but there are enough to get you to where you want to be. Now, zombies are bad. So naturally you will want to kill said zombies. In fact, you have to or your vehicle will be flipped after awhile. I don’t care how good you are, zombies are a pain in the ass. The first tactic, which is also the best for the most part, is to run the zombies into the obstacles scattered about. This means try to avoid these obstacles with your car. The faster you are going the more damage a hit to the zombies does. The second option is to use weapons to kill the zombies when they are on your car. You have to aim them in the direction the zombie is though but it is easy enough to figure out. Your strategy should be to use a combo of both of these techniques. After all, the ammo runs out on the better weapons. I mentioned weapons, there are many weapons in the game. They vary from pistals to fully automatic machine guns to biological weapons that continue to do damage over time after a hit. Most of these weapons are unlocked after completing certain goals. That is pretty much it to the game. It offers a new perspective to the Zombie epidemic in games. While the game is pretty basic, I can easily suggest that you Play This Game!

Eternity Warriors: Review

on Tuesday, 26 July 2011. Posted in iDevices, Eternity Warriors

The iPhone offers a plethora of games. There are quite a few free ones. Unfortunately, there are quite a few that are less than stellar. Luckily, review sites like us can weed out the bad ones for you. So, is Eternity Warriors a dud?

Well, if you don't know, Eternity Warriors is top down melee action game with some light RPG elements. The game's developer is Glu Mobile. And best of all, it is free! Eternity Warriors takes place in Northern Udar. After 20 years of peace under the command of Demon King Kilic, there is a demon threat. And of course only the Eternity Warriors can defeat this evil threat.

The game features two controllable characters. You can play with friends from Game Center or Facebook. If you don't play with a friend., the other character turns into an NPC. Unfortunately, the NPC does not get upgraded weapons or armor. However, these are not necessarily needed to progress through the game.

The game features waves of enemies that you must fight through. There are 30 waves in each Onslaught and there are 10 Onslaughts. As far as I know, the only Onslaught as of writing is the Cave or Mordana. The waves get increasingly difficult as does the Onslaughts. Unfortunately, from one Onslaught to the next there is much difference in the waves. The levels of the monster mostly seems like the only thing that changes.

Now, there are several types of demons that can spawn during the waves. I don't know the names of each monster so I will just kind of give a brief explanation.

Undead
The first seems to be the standard undead. They are weak and slow.

Skeleton Warrior
The next demon up is the skeleton warrior. These guys are faster and a little bit stronger. But, they still don't offer that much of threat.

Exploding Bug
These little guys are easy kills. However, if they make contact with you they explode and do some pretty intense damage. They start off slow but once they see you they charge at a faster pace. Depending on your strength and weapon damage, you should be able to kill these guys in one hit.

Horned Beast
These guys walk up to you and stab you with their thorned armor. You have to hit these guys to expose their flesh. The armor takes up most of the damage but once hit they open up their armor and you can start attacking their flesh. While exposed, they stand still for a couple seconds doing nothing. This is your time to attack and once open they are fairly easy to kill.

Giant
The giant is a slow monstrosity. It has a decent amount of health and does some pretty intense melee damage. If you keep up with your weapon, you can usually knock these guys back before they do any damage. Usually, their first initial attack is a charge and once they are near they wail on you with their huge club.

Mage
These guys are slow and the only pure range demon. They are moderately easy to kill and their range attack isn't all that strong but can be a nuisance if they are not taken care of.

Armored Giant
These guys are the bigger brother of the giant. They are armored. And they carry numerous blades. Their long range attack is that they throw two sets of blades at you. They are farely easy to dodge. The other attack is the swing of their blades. Irregardless, these guys do some decent damage and they are not that easy to kill. Luckily, they are as slow is their little brother.

Green Poison Thing
These guys are a formidable opponent. They are not that easy to kill. They spit poison at you. And, if you kill them they explode into an ooz that sits on the ground for a set period of time that can still do damage. IMO, these are the most dangerous demon because of that. This is especially true on waves where there are multiples of these guys along with the huge hordes of other demons.

Rock Golem
These guys are probably the toughest to kill. They only have one attack. They throw a set of rocks. Unfortunately, this is also their weakness. Normally, your attacks do not deal damage to this beast. When it launches its attack, it hunches over and stays in that position for a few seconds. During this time you have to attack its back. Even still, it has a lot of health.

Minotaur
This is the ultimate demon. These guys are big, strong, and tough. They have a charge attack that does a lot of damage. Than, they can hit you with their spiked club and a decent amount of damage as well. These guys should be first priority in the attacks.

Overall, the variety of monsters manages to keep the game interesting and challenging. A thing to note is if you are damaged you get a few seconds of invincibility.

The sound of the game is pretty awesome. The sound effects are what you would expect. But what is awesome, is the music. The game utilizes some hard rock. Did I mention awesome?!

While battling, you level up your character. I haven't really noticed any drastic effects from leveling up but leveling up allows you to get different weapons and armor and various items. The weapons also level up individually as you battle which causes an increase in gold received from the monsters you kill. And the gold is needed to buy the better items. Some weapons and armors require the use of crystals which you can get from completing onslaughts, promotional offers, or through purchase. The weapons offer unique specials and combos. Overall, the item structure is fairly satisfying.

Now, while the game is pretty decent it has its flaws. First, the game becomes extremely repetitive after the first couple of onslaughts. You only have three attacks and few different combo attacks. The game becomes a button masher. The levels start imitating each other after awhile as well. This kind of ties in with the repetitive nature. Finally, in game purchase scheme is getting very old and the same is true for this game. For instance, in order to get the best armor in the game you need to get quite a few crystals. Actually, the last couple set of armor require crystals. Some of the best weapons are the same way. At least the game doesn't also utilize the stupid you need 100 of these items from your friends in order to complete this item. But overall, in game purchases with real world money is becoming over used and over abused.

Eternity Warriors is a free game. And, it seems to be bug free and and is pretty enjoyable for more than a couple of hours. Real world money purchase for in game currency makes a return which I am not a big fan of. However, I still recommend that you Play This Game!

Fragger: Review

on Sunday, 26 June 2011. Posted in iDevices, Fragger

The goal of Fragger is simple. Throw grenades and blow up the guys who look like robbers. The only thing you adjust is the trajectory and the power of the thrown grenades.

Fragger is a good game concept. Physics based puzzles are a lot of fun. So what does it excel in.

Fragger has explosions. Not only do the grenades explode after a set period of time, but there are explosive boxes that add to the puzzles. Some of these boxes even launch in a predetermined direction before exploding.

Fragger is a puzzle game. You can't just hope a grenade lands near an enemy and blows up and destroys them. There are obstacles that need to be destroyed. Some need to be destroyed in a certain order. Walls and ceilings need to be hit at the correct angles and power level.

The best perk that this game offers is that it is free. Or, it was free. Free is always good.

Now, Fragger does a lot of things wrong. This could be probably overlooked but there are much better variations of the concept that this game offers. Case in point, Angry Birds.

First, the puzzles overall are more so repetitive and unenjoyable. There are some surprises but overall just not that exciting.

The game acts very strange at times as well. Sometimes, I can get the angle much closer to the ground. Than, I will restart the level and I can no longer get that angle.

The game has crashed and frozen on me way to much as well. It is hard to enjoy a game when you are about to beat a level that does have some challenge and than BAM, no longer can continue to play.

So, what is the verdict? Well, if you are desperate for a free game to waste a few minutes to an hour, give the game a go. Otherwise, try a different one instead.

War Can Be Epic

on Wednesday, 01 June 2011. Posted in iDevices, Epic War TD

To be frank, tower defense games are awesome. I have yet to find a tower defense game that I do not enjoy. So, when reading this take that into account.

Epic War TD is a tower defense game for the iPhone. I would say it has a futuresque setting to it. Your enemies essentially come down to two groups, humans and aliens. And like any tower defense game, you build towers of defense along a path to kill off your enemy before they reach your fort.

As far as Tower Defense games go, this one really isn't all that expansive. There are only five towers. What is neat is that two of the towers can reduce the strength of either human or alien targets depending on the tower. This has to be unlocked later in the upgrades. Each tower has three aspects to it that can be upgraded 5 times each. To give an example, range and damage are the two most common ones. After you have upgraded a tower to what I figure to be 3 upgrades for each skill set, you can purchase the special ability. This changes between the different towers.

The setting of each level is very appropriate. They are all ravaged areas. Some are dessert like with just hardened ground that identifies the path of the enemy. Some are more urban. The settings look great on the Retina Display.

The enemy units look just as good. All seem to be of very high detail. Explosions are big and theatrical. Fleshy units erupt into a giant spout of blood. Overall, the game has the eye candy.

There are two versions of the game. There is a paid version and than there is a Ad Supported version. The Ad Supported version is free but has ads displayed. This is a little inconvenient as the ads take up a decent amount of screen real estate. Otherwise, there doesn't appear to be much else different between the two versions.

If you are looking for a good tower defense game or just a good game in general to waste some time on the iPhone, I suggest You Play This Game Now! Actually, if you game at all Play This Game!

The Haypi Kingdom

on Tuesday, 31 May 2011. Posted in iDevices, Haypi Kingdom

I am not the biggest fan of massive multiplayer online games, MMOGs. Actually, there are very few that I like and usually none of them I play. Haypi Kingdom has been somewhat recently introduced to my gaming repertoire. Essentially, you are in control of a town as a general. You gather resources, build up your forces, and enhance the defenses. Than, you can attack other towns.

What is strange is that it is only available on mobile devices. As of right now, that includes iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7. This really is not a bad thing. This allows the game to be solely enhanced for these platforms. Any other platform is drastically different and may hamper the effectiveness on these platforms.

Usually, games like this I quit after a week. I don't know if you have ever been acquainted with a game called Travian but that was one example. I played a couple of times but each time it lasted about only a week. One part of the problem was that I had to make sure to get on it everyday. It always seemed a hassle for maybe 10 minutes of gameplay at a time. I think the other problem always was that I got attacked before I could do anything. Before I knew it, I had lost my city.

Haypi Kingdom seems to fix all the problems I had with other similar games. I always have my phone on me and since this game is an app, it takes 5 seconds to get it up and running. It is just so easy. Also, I am able to incorporate some strategy in this version.

Otherwise, the game is pretty solid. The developers are consistently updating and creating events to keep the game fresh. The graphics are suitable. Nothing spectacular but this is also a mobile game so that really isn't a staple anyways.

The community is pretty nice as well. There is an in-game chat that it is easy to ask for advice on or just talk about the game. Players tend to not talk about real life which is also kind of awesome.

I suggest You Play This Game!

Who Wants To Be An Office Jerk?

on Sunday, 29 May 2011. Posted in iDevices, Office Jerk

The other day I was exploring the App Store trying to see if there were any new ones that I wanted. I came across a game that was free that could have a pretty cool concept. That concept was being an Office Jerk, the title of the game. I really didn't go in with high hopes. But, I have been surprised in the past.

Office Jerk gives you the task of being an office jerk. Your goal is just to irritate the employee in front of you. You have no idea who he is except for a few clues that are in front of you. One, he is a fan of cats. Two, he is the office employee. Three, he has no balls.

You are given many options when it comes to things to throw at him. You can throw something common like a coffee mug to something crazy like a stick of dynamite. Please note: the above items are not even available for free anymore. You either have to purchase the ACME pack for things like dynamite and eggs or the No Ads pack for the stapler and mug and whatever else it includes. The No Ads pack gets rid of the ads in game as well. So, you are stuck with the cupcake, the pencil, the eraser, the wad of paper, and the fan.

There are some neat things that can happen but the main purpose is to throw things at this guys head. The other things I will let you figure out if you decide to get this game. To give some challenge, the fan's direction and wind speed alters where your objects go. You can alter the direction you throw them to counteract this. However, if you throw the fan the games acts like the fan is still there. This makes no sense to me whatsoever. This might make sense if the fan went in the opposite direction but it doesn't.

After about 10 minutes playing this game, I was already bored. And that was with all the items available to me. I am not even sure how this game excelled to the Top 25 list. I don't even understand how the developers think that they can charge for items that may add only 5 more minutes of enjoyment. And now that there is the no ads pack, ads are riddled everywhere and nearly makes the game unplayable. In fact, there was one time where I couldn't do anything in the game which I assumed with their way of advertising.

I hate to do this, oh wait no I don't, DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. It really is a waste of time and space to download it.

ZombieSmash Demolished

on Friday, 13 May 2011. Posted in iDevices, ZombieSmash

Ah! The zombie apocalypse is here! You are on your own in a house and you have to fight off waves of zombies with your magical telekinetic hand and your some bizarre control over bizarre objects. Oh wait, that isn't the zombie apocalypse, that is ZombieSmash!

Now, I bought the game because of the description it gave. It mentioned strategy and castle/tower defense. There is some strategy to it. However, the tower defense aspect can really only be associated with the game very vaguely. When I started playing and noticed this, I was kind of pissed.

However, when I got passed that the game is actually quite a bit of fun. Essentially your finger is some sort of zombie tossing and weapon/object summoning force of nature. Some zombies can not be tossed. Some are fast. Some are weapon wielding. There is a fair amount of variety when it comes to zombies.

Now, your goal is to protect your house. The screen goes from left of the house, to the right of the house, and half way covers both sides of the house. It can get pretty challenging.

While your are trying to toss and kill zombies, you are also trying to collect powerups and stars. Powerups range from weapons to objects falling from the sky. Some of the weapons are worked into the certain levels to provide a change of pace. These powerups require you to play somewhat smart. Especially when you get to a point where certain zombies start coming that can only be killed by these powerups, you need to make sure you have some ready.

I mentioned the stars earlier. Think of these as a type of experience or currency. You try to collect as many as you can. After you complete a level you are taken to the level select screen. After a certain number of levels, you get access to the shop. The shop allows you to upgrade your powerups or your house. Powerups become more powerful and your house becomes more defense ready. One of the more important things that you can upgrade is your powerup slots. You are only allowed to hold a certain number of powerups each level. A little more strategy is needed as result of this.  You start with one. You will eventually get two just from playing but the rest you need to get from the shop.

Initially, I mentioned some dislike towards the game. But, I got passed the initial dislike and the game turned out to be a well made purchase. I definitely recommend this game to anyone with an iPhone. Play It!!!

Death By Worm

on Wednesday, 04 May 2011. Posted in iDevices, Death Worm

Classic games are awesome. Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, Centipede, Asteroids, etc all have a place in most gamers library. Remakes can bring a similar enjoyment while also exposing newer gamers to a taste of the classics. Great remakes can even bring a better gaming experience. That being said, let's talk about Death Worm.

Death worm for the iPhone is a remake. Actually, it is a pretty bad ass remake. But, let's go through the details before jumping to conclusions.

The first thing to notice is the graphics. To be honest, the main menu graphics are much better than the in game graphics. However, the in game graphics aren't terrible and gives it the retro look. For the iPhone, that is a good look.

The gameplay is pretty basic. You control a big worm that eats anything that moves. However, the basic elements allow you to make the game your own and it can get pretty addictive.

The game offers ultimate three game modes. The first is campaign. You try to get through to a set level and you beat the area. Survival lets you play until you die. Mini games were a pleasant surprise.

The one area where I am not to sure about is the power ups. This concept could be awesome but it is severely limited. You have two power ups, the fireball which  allows you to shoot a fire ball from your mouth which can kill your victims from a distance. Than, there is the Nitro which allows you to travel at super speeds. This power up is a lot of fun. Now, those are the only two. Which isn't bad but it does feel limited. Also, you can upgrade these abilities but the upgrades only extend or give you more.

Really, you can't go wrong with Death Worm. It is awesome! So naturally, I give this game a must play.

Train Conductor: Don't Crash

When I was younger, I loved to play with train sets. They were a blast. I still enjoy them now to some extent. So naturally, I would probably download Train Conductor for the iPhone. I suppose the game being free at the time didn't hurt either!

Train Conductor puts you in charge of several train tracks and you are tasked with guiding trains safely. You get bonus points if you can get the trains on the right track. At times, there are several trains on the screen that you have to direct.

There are a couple of cities that you are the levels. The game starts out pretty easy. You only have three tracks to worry about. As you get further along, more tracks are introduced as well as objects that can prevent the flow of the train.

Also, there are two speed settings. Standard and Fast. Each level has a set amount of time. However, you can make the trains go faster with the fast setting so that the trains move faster. The amount of time does not change. This allows you to rack up many more points. Plus, it can get insanely difficult with this Fast setting.

Now, should you play it? Well, the games does offer a challenge. However, the game is pretty short. And really, if you are not trying to beat the leaders on the leader board there probably isn't any replay value. However, I definitely think it is worth a play through. I may not suggest getting it if there is a fee though.
