Social Monopoly

Well, it must be the year of the Monopoly. Monopoly games are appearing everywhere. First, we reviewed it for the iDevices. And now, we have a review of the Social/Facebook version of the game.

Now, don't expect Monopoly Millionaires(the title of the game for Facebook) to play like the Monopoly you know and love. There are similar characteristics and the feel is very similar but it is a completely different game. Which, when I found out I though I was going to hate it.

However, after playing it for a while, I really like the game. Each person has their own board. You can't play on your own board. You can play on your friends' boards. You essentially only build on your board. When playing on other boards, you can win money and property cards. The property cards allow you to upgrade your buildings on your board when you have enough of them. So, for the first standard house upgrade you need one card of each property of that color. Definitely a little strange but it works out fine. There are also hotels you can build on your board. You need to have houses on all the properties for that color. Than, you can start building that hotel. Hotel's bring in the more social aspect that we are all used to. You need to get your friends help to complete and upgrade your hotels.

There are also prizes you can lay on your board to entice players to play on your board. They include bonus dice rolls, money, and sets of property cards. Naturally, you will most likely play on boards that have more of these cards as well.

And that, is pretty much how the game works. There are some finer details. However, I will leave those to be sought out.

Overall, this is a pretty good adaptation of Monopoly for the socialites. I would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy Facebook games and the like. Now, if only I had more friends who played social games...

Time To Make A Cityville

on Friday, 25 February 2011. Posted in Social, Cityville

I absolutely hate social games. They are nearly pointless. They are more repetitive than an MMORPG. They lack depth. Their social element is not really all that social. And yet, I continue to play them. Granted, they only keep my attention for about a month. The past month Cityville has been getting my attention.

Cityville is by Zynga. Zynga is probably the Google of social games. They take a preexisting product and remake it to usually a more functional and fun game. This is the case with Cityville.

Cityville tasks you with building a city. You must build businesses, houses, decorations, franchises, community buildings, and more. The game goals are very similar to other Zynga games like Frontierville; build this, harvest that, decorate those, etc. However, so far the game is much more balanced than previous games based on the same goal system. You don't need a million friends which is good. I am sorry, I am not adding strangers to my friend list just so I can get further in a game.

But alas, I was bored pretty quick. It actually did pretty well considering. The only other game that got more of my attention was Farmville and that is only because that was my first social game and I was new so it didn't feel repetitive at first.

If you are looking to pass a few minutes everyday than I believe that Cityville will allow you to do that for around a month. It is definitely worth trying out.
