Dead Frontier: Review

on Tuesday, 01 November 2011. Posted in Web, Games, Dead Frontier

So, I decided to check out games that run through Chrome's Plugin manager thing that it offers. After doing some research, I decided to try out Dead Frontier. It seemed to have positive reviews and it is free to play.

Dead Frontier is a MMO Zombie Killing Overhead Shooter. Which sounds great. Zombie killing with it being MMO should provide endless fun. After all, how can you screw up a zombie game...

As I said, this game is a overhead shooter. Think Zombies Ate My Neighbors or more recently Dead Nation, both excellent zombie games btw. A lot of browser based games take this perspective so it is a good choice for this game.

Graphics are nothing to cry or cheer about. They are average but do provide an appropriate feel to the game. Especially as the game is darker.

There are various weapons that you can obtain. You can buy them or pick them up from enemies you kill, etc. The only downfall is, from what I have noticed, that you can only sell the items to other players. I could be wrong on this. You also have no real guideline on the current prices.

The maps are based in square segments. You travel through the squares to go to the next square. Each square is a separate load. Also, each square takes a bit to get through. Within the first quest, I already hated traveling around as it took forever to get where I needed and then to get back was just tedious. I can't imagine what it would be like to get to even further areas.

As you go through the areas you can walk past zombies without getting noticed but if you do get noticed, the zombies start to come after you. You can easily avoid them for the most part. I don't believe I have encountered every zombie type so there might be some that are crazy fast and are hard to run away from. Luckily, the areas I traveled were fairly populate by other players so even with massive hoards of zombies attacking you, you usually had some help.

There are a lot of different classes to choose from. I was quite impressed. However, the classes didn't offer a whole lot of difference between many of them except for what they looked like. However, there were a few gems.

Overall, I found Dead Frontier very disappointing. It was more tedious than fun. The game tries to be expansive but overall is just repetitive. I got bored after the first mission and stopped playing after that. Maybe it gets a hell of a lot better but I doubt it would get that much better in my eyes. But, the game is free to play. There are of course payed elements to it but I didn't feel forced to pay for anything in my short time with the game. I would recommend that you Do Not Play This Game. There are far better free MMOs out there to waste your time on.

If you do decide to play this game, I recommend starting with a character that comes with a upgraded melee weapon. To start with, this will be most beneficial as zombies are easy to strike and run. I didn't do this and went through a lot of ammo. You should still get a melee weapon but I would have preferred an upgraded one.

Runescape: Review

on Friday, 12 August 2011. Posted in Web, Runescape

For most, Runescape is the thing to avoid. Ask most gamers if they play Runescape and they will tell you they once did but they have since grown up. Some even go as far as to call it the vain of the MMO community. Is it really?

First, let me give you a little background about my relationship with Runescape. It is a pretty bitter sweet one. I started playing Runescape over a decade ago. One of my first experiences was being led into the Wilderness for some mythical Rune armor. Now, at that time I did not know what either was and I was like level 13 maybe. They were level 30s. I was with one other person. We were led out and instantly killed. What did they get from me, a bronze dagger lol.

When I first started I played non stop. I lost a few accounts. But I played and played and played. Hell, it was free so why not. The graphics sucked. There was practically no story line. I did the quests heavily.

Now, I try and play but I am just reminded of the grind and usually quit again fairly quickly. But enough of my story and lets talk Runescape.

While the graphics department has come a long way, the graphics are still very sub par. I know the reasons why the graphics remain fairly low key. It is a browser based game. However, it does utilize Java which means fairly good graphics are not out of the question.

The controls are as basic as ever but the UI is much more complex. Runescape has added a lot of content and with the content has come more UI elements. Now, even to fairly familiar user it can be a little more complex than it needs to be.

While there used to be no storyline, Jagex has gone a long way to introduce story line elements to its quest structure. As far as I am concerned, the storyline is up to par with other MMO RPGs now. But, this really isn't a strong suit with these types of games anyways.

One thing that Runescape does have is content. There are quests constantly being added. Granted, this is mostly for members along with the other content. But for a little over $5 a month that is not bad. There are skills up the butt. There are over 20 skills that you can level and vary quite a bit. The world is pretty diverse as well. It may not be as huge as other MMO games but in the scope of Runescape it is plenty.

Unfortunately, nearly everything in Runescape requires a huge grind. More so than in most other MMOs. There are people that just mine coal for months on end trying to get their level up to a much higher level. I for one hate grinding these days which is why I don't play much MMO RPG anymore.

So, should you play it? The inner old gamer in me wants to say yes. I still play it on the occasion. However, if you are an experienced gamer, you may want to avoid this game. Initially it is free. But content is rarely added for non members. A member is a payed subscriber FYI. If you are newish, give it a try. But my hardcore gamer tells me to tell you, "Don't Play This Game!"

I might cry a little.
